Welcome Everybody
We have finished reading 'Farewell to Manzanar' by Jeanne Wakatsuki in class and we're now going to explore a little further...
What is the real story of the 110,000 Japanese-Americans forced into internment camps during World War II? How does Jeanne Wakatsuki's account in Farewell to Manzanar compare to the accounts from other internment camps found on the Internet?
Learning Activities
Using the Internet, find stories of other internment camp survivors
Select at least two accounts of survivors from camps other than Manzanar
Using the book Farewell to Manzanar and the Internet accounts, make a list of the similarities and differences in the experiences between the survivors of Manzanar and the other camp.
Complete a Venn diagram using the information from the book and the Internet. You might include the following topics in your list:
• Violence and Riots
• Living Conditions
• Camp Organizations
• Military Problems
Write an essay in which you compare their experiences with Jeanne Wakatsuki's at Manzanar
Assessment
To meet the expository essay standard, you will need to
• Compare accounts on the Internet of other camps and discuss the similarities and differences
• Develop a clear thesis based on the question: What are the important differences in the Internment Camps?
• Synthesize information from two sources, at least, noting whether they are primary or secondary sources

Hello Miss EnglishTeacher,
ReplyDeleteWould you please explain the difference between a primary and a secondary source?
Johhny
Hello Johnny,
ReplyDeleteAn excellent question. I will let Mrs. Turner, our teacher librarian, explain this to the class.
